India has taken a major step toward modernizing its toll collection system with the launch of the country’s first barrier-free toll plaza. The system has been introduced at the Choriyasi toll plaza near Surat on the Mumbai–Delhi stretch of NH-48.
This new setup uses Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology, allowing vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping. Toll charges are automatically deducted using FASTag and number plate recognition as vehicles approach the plaza.
The initiative is expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve fuel efficiency. The central government aims to implement this technology across India by the end of 2026.
