In a significant political development in Kerala, veteran Marxist leader and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been chosen as the CPI(M) Legislature Party leader and will serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. The decision marks a new phase in Vijayan’s long political career following the Left Democratic Front’s heavy defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The announcement came on the same day the AICC named V D Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister. Under Vijayan’s leadership, the LDF suffered one of its worst electoral setbacks, with the CPI(M) winning only 26 seats and the alliance securing just 35 seats overall. In contrast, the Congress-led UDF swept to power with 102 seats.
After the defeat, speculation was rife about a possible generational shift within the CPI(M), with several leaders and supporters expecting the party to appoint a younger face as Opposition Leader. Former Finance Minister K N Balagopal was among the names discussed for the role.
However, the party ultimately decided to back Vijayan, citing his vast administrative experience, organisational strength and sharp political acumen. As a senior politburo member and one of the CPI(M)’s tallest leaders nationally, the party believes Vijayan is best suited to lead the opposition against a strong government headed by V D Satheesan.
At the same time, some sections within the Left camp reportedly expressed concerns that retaining Vijayan in a prominent role could further fuel public resentment following the electoral debacle.
