A rare and endangered civet cat, locally known as Punugu Pilli, was spotted on Panakala Swamy Hill in Mangalagiri. Devotees walking along the ghat road recently noticed the animal hiding among the rocks and captured photos and videos, which later went viral on social media.
Civet cats are generally nocturnal and feed on fruits and small insects. They are commonly found in forest regions such as Seshachalam and Nallamala.
The sighting has attracted attention as Mangalagiri Hill is usually crowded with devotees. Civet cats are also known for a fragrant secretion produced by their bodies, which has traditionally been collected and used to make perfume oil.
There are reportedly around 38 species of civets. Forest officials are expected to determine the exact species of the civet spotted at Mangalagiri.
