India’s overall automobile retail sales stood at 24.23 lakh units in August 2026, compared with 20,62,038 units in August 2025.
The 17.51% year-on-year growth made August the strongest-ever August for India's auto retail market. However, sales were 6.48% lower than July’s record 25,91,138 units, with FADA attributing the monthly decline partly to the monsoon slowdown and a shift in the festive calendar.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Cross 4 Lakh
Passenger vehicle retail sales reached 4,02,398 units, registering 16.14% growth over August 2025.
It was the first time passenger vehicle retail sales crossed the 4-lakh mark in August, setting a new monthly record for the segment.
Alternative Fuels Overtake Petrol
One of the biggest developments in August was the change in India’s passenger vehicle fuel mix.
For the first time, CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles combined accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales, slightly ahead of petrol/ethanol vehicles at 40.85%.
CNG accounted for 25.28%, hybrids 9.04% and EVs 7.63% of passenger vehicle sales. Petrol nevertheless remained the largest individual fuel category.
Two-Wheeler Sales Remain the Biggest Growth Driver
Two-wheeler retail sales increased 19.69% year-on-year to 17,14,610 units, marking the segment’s strongest-ever August.
Commercial vehicle sales also grew 14.45% to 90,769 units, while three-wheeler registrations increased 8.64% to 1,22,281 units.
EV Sales Hit Record
Electric vehicle retail sales across categories rose 52.9% year-on-year to 2,98,448 units, taking overall EV penetration to around 12.3%.
Electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.68% of total two-wheeler registrations, while EVs represented 65.30% of three-wheeler retail sales.
Rural Markets Outpace Urban India
Rural markets continued to perform strongly, with overall vehicle retail growth reaching 19.79% year-on-year, compared with 15.17% in urban areas.
The difference was particularly visible in passenger vehicles. Rural PV registrations rose 24.99%, more than double the 10.93% growth recorded in urban markets.
Festive Season to Test Demand
FADA said the real test for the automobile industry will come during the September-November festive season.
While dealer sentiment remains positive, passenger vehicle inventory has risen to around 38-40 days, well above FADA’s recommended 21-day benchmark. The association has urged manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches more closely with actual retail demand.
