Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for austerity measures, Yogi Adityanath has announced major cost-cutting steps in Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief Minister on Tuesday ordered a 50 percent reduction in the number of vehicles accompanying ministers and senior officials with immediate effect.

During a high-level review meeting attended by top bureaucrats and police officials, Yogi Adityanath also appealed to people to conserve fuel and avoid non-essential gold purchases amid the continuing West Asia crisis and global uncertainty.

He urged ministers, MPs, MLAs and public representatives to use public transport at least once a week and observe a “No Vehicle Day” every week.

The UP government says the move is aimed at promoting austerity, saving fuel and setting an example for the public.
