Acclaimed filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has offered fans a rare glimpse into the making of his ambitious film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Speaking about the Africa schedule, Rajamouli said the experience was so spectacular that "not even IMAX could fully capture what we experienced there."
According to Rajamouli, the African landscapes, vast open spaces, dramatic skies, and unique natural lighting provided visuals that were impossible to recreate on a set or through computer graphics. He explained that the team wanted audiences to experience the grandeur of these real locations on the big screen.
The filmmaker revealed that filming in Africa was both physically demanding and creatively rewarding. The cast and crew spent long hours shooting in remote locations to capture the authenticity required for the film's adventurous storyline.
Rajamouli also confirmed that nearly 80% of the film has been completed, with only the remaining portions currently being shot. Most of the large-scale action sequences have already been wrapped up, while post-production and visual effects work are progressing simultaneously.
Varanasi is being filmed entirely using IMAX-certified cameras, making it one of the most technically ambitious Indian films ever produced. The movie features Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in pivotal roles.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, and is already regarded as one of the most anticipated Indian films in production.
