Scientists have stated that consuming large amounts of junk food at an early age may cause long-term changes in the brain. Even if healthier eating habits are adopted later in life, these effects may not completely disappear. They found that foods high in fat and sugar not only change eating habits but also affect the parts of the brain responsible for controlling appetite.
However, some beneficial gut bacteria and prebiotic fibers have shown the potential to reduce some of these effects. According to a recent study conducted by University College Cork (UCC), children who frequently consume foods high in fat and sugar may experience long-lasting changes in their brains. The study revealed that these effects could continue even after their eating habits improve later in life.
Researchers also explained that beneficial gut bacteria and prebiotic fibers may help reduce these long-term effects to some extent. They may also support and encourage healthier eating habits in the future.
Scientists at APC Microbiome, a leading research center affiliated with UCC, discovered that unhealthy eating habits during early life can alter how the brain controls hunger and food intake. They observed that these changes persisted even after unhealthy eating stopped and body weight returned to normal.
Today’s children are growing up surrounded by highly processed foods. These foods are heavily advertised and easily available. Foods rich in sugar and fat have become common at birthday parties, school events, sports activities, and even as rewards for good behavior.
