In a major boost to menstrual health and women empowerment in Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the procurement of three lakh biodegradable sanitary napkins from the Sakhi Zamo Village Organisation. The women-led organisation is supported by the Indian Army and operates under the Ladakh Rural Livelihood Mission.
Every month, Ladakh distributes nearly 13 lakh sanitary pads to adolescent girls aged between 13 and 18. Out of this, three lakh pads will now be sourced from the local women’s group, while the remaining requirement will be fulfilled through open tenders. The project, sanctioned under the National Health Mission, is estimated to cost 15 lakh rupees, with each biodegradable pad priced at five rupees.
Officials said the eco-friendly sanitary napkins leave no toxic residue, making them suitable for Ladakh’s fragile environment. The Lieutenant Governor stressed that supporting women-led Self-Help Groups not only improves menstrual hygiene among girls but also strengthens sustainable rural livelihoods.
The BIONAP production centre at Martselang village in Leh currently provides direct employment to 26 local women, including spouses of serving and retired Army personnel. Authorities said the initiative reflects Ladakh’s vision of ensuring hygienic, affordable, and environmentally sustainable menstrual health products while promoting women-driven rural enterprises.
