American Airlines has announced a major restructuring of its senior leadership team as the company seeks to improve financial performance and close the profitability gap with competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. CEO Robert Isom described the changes as the first step in strengthening execution and improving operational performance.

As part of the reshuffle, former Spirit Airlines executive John Bendoraitis has been appointed to lead technical operations, while several senior executives have been given expanded responsibilities across commercial operations, customer experience, airports, communications and government affairs. The company said the changes are intended to improve coordination and speed up decision-making.

The leadership changes come as American Airlines continues to trail its biggest rivals in profitability. The airline expects to post roughly break-even results in 2026, largely due to higher jet fuel costs, while Delta and United continue to forecast stronger earnings. Labor unions representing pilots and flight attendants have also expressed concerns over the airline's financial performance and strategy.

Despite the pressure, CEO Robert Isom said the airline will continue focusing on expanding its international network, increasing premium travel revenue and strengthening its loyalty program as part of its long-term growth strategy.
