US President Donald Trump has praised India’s election system while renewing his demand for stricter voting rules in America. Trump recalled Indian Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar questioning how elections can be conducted in the US without requiring voters to have valid photo identification.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said more than 646 million people voted in India’s latest general election, while less than one percent used postal ballots. He stressed that every voter in India is required to have valid photo identification.
Trump has been pushing for the ‘SAVE America Act’ to strengthen voter eligibility rules in the US. If enacted, the legislation would require proof of US citizenship for voter registration, introduce nationwide voter ID requirements and significantly restrict voting by mail.
Trump argues the measures are necessary to prevent election irregularities. However, the proposals remain politically contentious, with differences of opinion among both Democrats and Republicans. No clear progress has been made on the legislation following the US Senate’s recent five-week recess.
