At least five Palestinians have been killed in separate Israeli air strikes in Gaza City, according to Palestinian medical officials, as violence continues despite the US-backed ceasefire that took effect in October 2025.
The latest attacks took place on Monday, August 31, with two separate strikes reported in areas of Gaza City where displaced Palestinians have been sheltering.
Two killed near municipal park
The first strike hit a gathering near a municipal public park in Gaza City, an area crowded with displaced families.
Medical officials said two people were killed and several others wounded in the attack. The victims were taken to Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical facility.
The attack came as thousands of displaced Palestinians continue to live in difficult conditions across Gaza, many of them in makeshift shelters.
Three killed in vehicle strike
Later, another Israeli air strike targeted a vehicle in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, in western Gaza City.
According to medical officials, three people were killed and several others were injured. The damaged vehicle was taken as evidence of the intensity of the strike, while relatives and friends gathered at Al-Shifa Hospital to mourn two of those killed.
Israel says Hamas operatives were targeted
The Israeli military said both attacks were aimed at Hamas military operatives.
However, the military did not immediately provide further information or publicly release evidence supporting its claims.
The latest strikes have added to concerns over continued violence in Gaza despite the ceasefire agreement.
Ceasefire remains fragile
The October 2025 US-backed ceasefire halted major fighting but has not completely stopped Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
According to Gaza's Health Ministry, more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since the ceasefire took effect. Reuters also reported that more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the war began following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel.
Israel maintains that its military operations are aimed at preventing attacks by Hamas and other armed groups. Hamas, meanwhile, has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and undermining broader diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
