Popular U.S. sandwich chain Jersey Mike's Subs made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) after completing an Initial Public Offering (IPO) that raised about $1 billion. The company sold approximately 43.5 million shares at $23 per share, valuing the business at around $7.3 billion at the time of the offering.
Despite the strong IPO, the stock came under pressure on its first day of trading. Shares declined by about 2%, trading below the IPO price, indicating that investors were cautious about the company's valuation even though the brand enjoys strong customer loyalty and steady business growth.
Jersey Mike's currently operates more than 3,300 restaurants across the United States and Canada. The company plans an aggressive expansion strategy, targeting thousands of additional outlets in the U.S. as well as international markets in the coming years.
The company is backed by private equity firm Blackstone, which continues to retain a controlling stake after the IPO. Executives said the public listing is part of a long-term growth strategy rather than a short-term stock market milestone, expressing confidence that continued expansion and strong financial performance will create value over time.
Market analysts noted that while Jersey Mike's has reported healthy revenue growth and profitability, some investors believe the IPO valuation was relatively high compared with other publicly traded restaurant chains. This cautious outlook contributed to the stock's weak debut despite the successful fundraising.
