A massive landslide in Nepal’s Darchula district has partially blocked the Chamelia River, causing water to accumulate upstream and creating an artificial lake.A large section of a hillside collapsed into the river at Bhattad in Api Himal Rural Municipality, obstructing the natural flow. With heavy rain continuing in the region, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
The Chamelia River joins the Kali River near the India-Nepal border. Officials fear that if the natural debris barrier suddenly gives way, the accumulated water could surge into the Kali River and trigger flash flooding in downstream settlements on both sides of the border.
As a precaution, 15 families living close to the river have been moved to safer locations. Authorities have also advised residents and employees of the Chamelia, Upper Chamelia and Middle Chamelia hydropower projects to shift to safer areas.
However, Darchula officials said there is no immediate danger, as water is still flowing through nearly half of the river channel.
The continuing heavy rainfall remains a major concern, as further landslides could worsen the obstruction. Indian authorities have also been placed on alert, with police, Sashastra Seema Bal and other agencies monitoring the situation.
Residents living along the Kali River have been advised to remain vigilant as authorities continue to assess the risk of a sudden breach and possible flooding.
