Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen after North Korea condemned a US decision to approve the potential sale of missiles and related military equipment to South Korea.
North Koreaโs Foreign Ministry described the move as evidence of Washingtonโs continued hostile policy and warned that Pyongyang would respond โstrongly and immediatelyโ to what it considers hostile actions.
$125 Million Missile Sale
The US State Department has approved a potential sale worth around $125 million to South Korea involving AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and related equipment.
Pyongyang said the proposed weapons deal would create a new threat to its security environment and further increase military tensions in the region.
North Korea Criticises US Policy
North Korea also criticised a US plan to fund activities focused on documenting human rights conditions in North Korea and gathering information about the country.
Pyongyang accused Washington of using such initiatives as part of an effort to create instability within North Korean society.
More US Weapons for South Korea
North Korea pointed to other US-approved weapons sales to South Korea this year, including advanced air-to-air missiles, naval helicopters, attack helicopters and precision-guided bombs.
Pyongyang said the growing military cooperation between Washington and Seoul could have negative consequences for the wider Asia-Pacific security environment.
Trump Signals Interest in Talks
The latest North Korean warning comes despite US President Donald Trumpโs renewed efforts to engage North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump has expressed interest in another meeting with Kim and said that the North Korean leader had responded to his outreach. However, Pyongyang has so far shown little public willingness to resume negotiations.
Military Tensions Remain
The United States and South Korea remain close security partners, while North Korea has long opposed their joint military activities and weapons cooperation.
Although Washington and Seoul recently scaled back an annual military exercise, Pyongyang continues to demand that the US abandon what it describes as a hostile policy toward North Korea.
