A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude shook Northern California, sending tremors across a wide area and prompting residents to seek information about possible aftershocks.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck near Redwood Valley in Mendocino County, with the epicentre located about 11 kilometres north of Redwood Valley. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 8.1 kilometres.

Residents across Northern California, including areas far from the epicentre, reported feeling the shaking. Emergency alert systems also sent notifications to people in parts of the region, including areas around the Bay Area.

Aftershocks Reported After Main Quake

Following the main earthquake, smaller aftershocks were recorded. A magnitude 2.5 aftershock was reported shortly after the initial tremor, while officials warned residents to remain prepared for additional activity.

The USGS said there is a possibility of more smaller earthquakes in the coming days as the region adjusts after the main shock.

No Major Damage Reported Initially

Initial reports indicated no widespread major damage or serious injuries. However, some residents reported strong shaking, with items falling from shelves and minor disruptions in certain areas.

Authorities continued inspections of buildings, roads and essential services to determine whether the earthquake caused any hidden damage.

Emergency Officials Monitor Situation

Local emergency agencies are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to stay alert for aftershocks.

Officials have encouraged people to check their homes for possible hazards, avoid damaged structures and follow safety instructions if additional tremors occur.

Northern California Remains Earthquake-Prone Region

Northern California is located in an active seismic zone, with several fault systems capable of producing earthquakes.

Scientists continue to study earthquake patterns in the region to improve early warning systems and help communities prepare for future seismic events.

The latest earthquake serves as another reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness in earthquake-prone areas.
