Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a temporary ceasefire with Russia as US President Donald Trump’s envoys prepare to visit Moscow and Kyiv for talks aimed at ending the war. Zelensky said Ukraine would suspend airstrikes during the talks and urged Russia to reciprocate by halting its own air attacks for as long as necessary to conduct negotiations.
US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are expected to travel to Moscow on Saturday and Kyiv on Sunday. Their meetings will focus on possible terms for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The ceasefire proposal came just hours after Russia launched a daytime airstrike on the headquarters of Ukraine’s intelligence service in Kyiv. Zelensky said the attack targeted the office of the country’s intelligence chief.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks have intensified across Ukraine. A strike on the Odesa region killed one person and injured at least five others, including a child. Two police officials were also killed in overnight strikes in the Dnipro region.With the war now continuing for more than four years, Zelensky says Kyiv wants “real options” for peace. The response from Moscow to the temporary ceasefire proposal will now be closely watched.
