Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Rajya Sabha debate on the proposed anti-paper leak legislation. Referring to the Prime Minister's midnight Instagram video for students, Kharge mocked the timing of the address and questioned the government's handling of the examination paper leak issue.
Kharge remarked that the Prime Minister addressed students on Instagram at midnight, sarcastically suggesting that such a late-night message was unusual. He argued that instead of speaking through social media, the Prime Minister should have addressed Parliament and provided a detailed explanation on the government's response to the paper leak controversy.
The Congress leader also criticized the proposed anti-paper leak legislation, alleging that the government delayed strengthening the legal framework and that the new Bill does not adequately address the root causes of recurring examination paper leaks. According to Kharge, meaningful reforms should focus on improving the examination system rather than relying only on stricter penalties.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier released a late-night Instagram video acknowledging students' concerns over examination irregularities. He assured students that the government would take strict action against those responsible, introduce stronger anti-paper leak measures and establish fast-track courts to deal with such cases.
The paper leak issue has become a major political and public concern, with protests by students and heated debates in Parliament. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen legal provisions against unfair practices in public examinations, while the Opposition continues to demand greater accountability and broader reforms in the education system.
