At least two people were killed and several others injured after a seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar, Madhapur, on Saturday afternoon. Rescue operations are underway at the site.
The building reportedly collapsed suddenly, triggering panic in the densely populated locality. Police, fire department personnel and other emergency teams rushed to the spot and began clearing the debris in search of people who might have been trapped underneath.
Police identified the deceased as Mahabat and Umesh, both from Madhya Pradesh. Preliminary information indicates that they had gone to the construction site for tile-related work and were inside the building when it collapsed.
Another person, identified as Raman Reddy, was seriously injured and shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The collapsed structure was reportedly being constructed on a plot measuring around 50 square yards and fell onto a neighbouring apartment building in Whitefield, causing partial damage. A nearby hostel was also evacuated as a precaution.
Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner Srijana inspected the accident site as rescue personnel continued their operation. A dog squad was also deployed to search the rubble for anyone who might still be trapped. Officials are assessing the condition of neighbouring buildings and determining whether more people were inside the structure.
Questions have also been raised over the building's permissions and construction approvals. Congress MLA Arekapudi Gandhi alleged that the structure did not have proper clearances and claimed that officials had previously stopped its construction. These allegations will be examined as part of the official investigation.
Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the collapse, possible violations of construction norms and whether negligence or unauthorised construction contributed to the accident.
