Thirty-two Congress MPs from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities on Monday, September 7, 2026, decided to approach President Droupadi Murmu over the alleged “purification yajna” reportedly conducted in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after a rally addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. During a meeting at Indira Bhavan, the party’s headquarters, the MPs termed the incident a serious affront to the dignity and self-respect of SC and ST communities. They said the episode also raised concerns over the constitutional principles of equality and the abolition of untouchability.
