Kerala is witnessing one of its most intense spells of monsoon rainfall this season, with heavy downpours causing extensive damage across several districts. At least seven people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents as flash floods and landslides continue to disrupt normal life across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for nine districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and urging residents to remain vigilant. Rivers have swollen rapidly, low-lying areas remain submerged, and several roads have become impassable due to flooding and landslides.
Emergency response teams, including disaster management authorities and local administration, have intensified rescue and evacuation efforts in vulnerable regions. Relief camps have been opened for displaced families, while authorities have advised people living in landslide-prone and flood-affected areas to move to safer locations.
The severe weather has also affected transportation and public services. Educational institutions in several districts have suspended classes, while tourism activities in parts of Idukki, including popular destinations such as Munnar and Vagamon, have been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure.
Weather officials have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, closely follow official advisories, and stay away from rivers, dams, and hilly regions until conditions improve.
