Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo, with defence cooperation, maritime security and regional developments taking centre stage during the talks.
The meeting comes as India and Sri Lanka continue to strengthen their strategic partnership, particularly in the Indian Ocean region, where maritime security and regional stability have become increasingly important.
Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
India and Sri Lanka have steadily expanded defence ties through military training, joint exercises, capacity building and maritime security cooperation.
India has also supported the development of Sri Lankaโs defence capabilities by providing training and other forms of assistance. Cooperation in maritime surveillance, disaster response and humanitarian assistance remains an important part of the relationship.
Focus on the Indian Ocean
Sri Lankaโs location makes it strategically important to India. With the Indian Ocean becoming increasingly significant for regional security and trade, closer coordination between the two neighbours is gaining importance.
The two countries have been working together on issues including maritime security, preventing illegal activities at sea and coordinating during emergencies and natural disasters.

Rajnath Singhโs meeting with President Dissanayake also underlines the importance both countries attach to peace and stability in the Indian Ocean.
For India, maintaining strong relations with its close maritime neighbour remains an important part of its neighbourhood policy. For Sri Lanka, closer defence and economic cooperation with India offers an opportunity to strengthen its capabilities and regional partnerships.
