Delhi Police detained Swatantra Bhardwaj in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr on Friday before formally arresting him in connection with the case.

The case relates to an alleged assault on Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad, during a protest at Jantar Mantar.

Viral Podcast Triggers Fresh Controversy

The case gained renewed attention after a video podcast featuring Bhardwaj circulated widely on social media.

In the video, Bhardwaj appeared to speak about the Jantar Mantar incident and claimed that he had seriously assaulted Nishu Azad's father. His comments triggered demands from CJP supporters and others for stronger police action.

What Happened at the Protest?

According to the FIR, Nishu Azad had attended the June 23 protest at Jantar Mantar with her father, Sanjay Kumar.

The complaint alleges that Bhardwaj and others questioned Kumar about recording the protest, following which an argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Kumar alleged that he was assaulted and suffered injuries to his head.

The police, however, have disputed claims that Kumar suffered a skull fracture, saying he sustained a simple head injury during the altercation.

More Charges Added to FIR

As pressure mounted following the viral video and protests outside the Parliament Street police station, Delhi Police amended the FIR.

Provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal intimidation were added. Police also registered a case under the POCSO Act following allegations that the minor protester received online abuse and rape threats.

Court Orders One-Day Police Custody

Bhardwaj was produced before a Delhi court on Saturday and was remanded to one day of police custody.

The manner in which he was produced before the judge was questioned by the lawyer representing Nishu Azad. Bhardwaj's defence lawyer, however, said the regular magistrate was unavailable and the accused was therefore produced before another judge following the addition of the new provisions.

Investigation Continues

Delhi Police are examining the alleged assault, statements made in the viral podcast, witness accounts and the circumstances surrounding the Jantar Mantar incident.

The allegations against Bhardwaj have not been established as guilt in court and remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
