The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) honored three exceptional physicians with its prestigious Most Distinguished Physicians Award during the 44th Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly, held from July 2–5, 2026, in Tampa, Florida.
The award recognizes physicians whose outstanding contributions have significantly advanced medicine, medical education, research, and community service. This year's honorees were Dr. Navin C. Shah, Dr. Ashok Fulambarker, and Dr. Ishita Gupta.
The selection process was led by Dr. Vandana Agarwal, Chair of the AAPI Awards Committee 2026, and her committee, who carefully evaluated an impressive pool of highly accomplished nominees before choosing this year's recipients.
The four-day convention brought together more than a thousand physicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, and innovators from across the United States and beyond, celebrating scientific excellence, professional collaboration, and the growing impact of Indian-origin physicians in global healthcare.
Honoring a Founder and Visionary
Dr. Navin C. Shah received the Architect of AAPI and Champion of Foreign Medical Graduates Equality Award for his historic role in founding AAPI and his lifelong efforts to eliminate discrimination against Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs).
A founding force behind the organization in 1982, Dr. Shah helped unite Indian physicians across America while advocating for equal opportunities for FMGs. His contributions extend beyond advocacy to include continuing medical education programs, trauma care initiatives, infectious disease projects, medical equipment donations to India, and international research collaborations. His decades of service continue to strengthen healthcare ties between the United States and India.
Lifetime of Service in Pulmonary Medicine
Dr. Ashok Fulambarker was recognized with the Lifetime of Service to Veterans and Pulmonary Medicine Award for more than four decades of excellence in pulmonary care, research, and medical education.
As Chief of Pulmonary Service at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, he mentored more than 80 pulmonary fellows while providing outstanding care to veterans and active-duty military personnel. His pioneering research on pulmonary function among Asian Indians has influenced clinical practice, and his leadership within AAPI has earned him widespread respect throughout the medical community.
Rising Global Voice in Medicine
The youngest recipient, Dr. Ishita Gupta, received the MSRF Award for Rising Global Voice in Internal Medicine and Research in recognition of her remarkable academic achievements and growing influence in medical research.
Currently serving as Chief Resident at St. Bernards Medical Center in Arkansas, Dr. Gupta has authored 45 peer-reviewed publications and received several prestigious national awards, including the ACP National Abstract Award and the ACG Outstanding Poster Presenter Award. Her commitment to quality improvement and medical education has established her as one of the emerging leaders among Indian-origin physicians.
Celebrating Excellence and Leadership
Outgoing AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty described the Tampa convention as the organization's premier gathering, emphasizing its commitment to scientific excellence, authenticity, and unity.
AAPI President Dr. Meher Medavaram reaffirmed the organization's vision of leading with integrity, inclusion, and purpose, while Awards Committee Chair Dr. Vandana Agarwal said the three honorees represent AAPI's past, present, and future through visionary leadership, lifelong service, and emerging excellence.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also recognized AAPI's extraordinary contribution to American healthcare, noting that AAPI physicians are involved in nearly one in seven patient encounters across the United States.
By honoring Dr. Navin C. Shah, Dr. Ashok Fulambarker, and Dr. Ishita Gupta, AAPI reaffirmed its mission of advancing healthcare, promoting equity, supporting medical research, and inspiring the next generation of physician leaders.
