Amazon is set to lay off 494 employees at its Port St. Lucie fulfilment center in Florida, with the job separations beginning September 17, according to a state filing.
The facility is being temporarily closed as Amazon begins a major $200 million renovation and modernization project. The company plans to reopen the site as a new fulfilment operation in 2028.
Most of the affected employees are warehouse workers. According to the filing, 466 workers are classified as Fulfillment Center Associate I, while the remaining positions include operations managers, human resources staff, safety personnel and IT support workers.
Amazon says it is working to help employees remain with the company by offering transfers to other facilities across South Florida. Workers who choose not to relocate will receive transition support, while employees will have an opportunity to apply for jobs at the renovated facility when it reopens. Amazon has said the shutdown is part of its effort to modernise its fulfilment network and is not a permanent exit from Port St. Lucie. The company expects the upgraded facility to employ around 1,000 people once operations resume.
The latest cuts come after Amazon announced other workforce reductions and facility changes this year as it continues to restructure its operations.
