OpenAI co-founder and leading AI researcher Andrej Karpathy has announced that he is joining Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s biggest rivals in the artificial intelligence space.
Karpathy shared the news on X, saying he is excited to return to frontier AI research and development as large language models continue to evolve rapidly. He also said he plans to continue his passion for AI education in the future.
Karpathy previously worked at Tesla as Director of AI, where he led the computer vision team behind Tesla Autopilot. After leaving Tesla in 2022, he briefly returned to OpenAI before launching his education startup Eureka Labs.
His move comes as competition among major AI companies intensifies, with firms racing to hire top researchers and strengthen their position in the fast-growing AI industry.
