An Indian-origin man in the UK has been sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Birmingham. Harinderpal Athwal, 41, drove his car onto a pavement on Soho Road in December last year, hitting a couple who were walking hand in hand. The 54-year-old husband died at the scene, while his 47-year-old wife suffered life-changing injuries. CCTV footage showed Athwal driving away without helping the victims. Police arrested him within 24 hours. Athwal pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after the crash. Along with the jail term, the court banned him from driving for 20 years. The victim’s wife said she feels completely lost without her husband, who was her emotional support and strength.
