In a dramatic incident in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by an angry mob while visiting the family of a party worker allegedly killed in post-poll violence in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district, on Saturday.

Protesters, mostly BJP supporters, hurled eggs and shoes at Banerjee while shouting “thief, thief” slogans. Despite security personnel trying to shield him, the crowd chased him to the residence of the deceased party worker, forcing him to wear a helmet for protection.

The situation remained tense for over an hour as Banerjee took shelter inside the house. Police and central forces later intervened and escorted him safely from the area. Banerjee claimed his clothes were torn and his spectacles were broken during the attack, alleging it was a BJP-sponsored act.

Reacting to the incident, Samik Bhattacharya condemned the violence, stating that democracy has no place for such actions. Mallikarjun Kharge also denounced the attack and called on both the state and central governments to ensure the safety of opposition leaders.

The attack is being viewed as one of the most serious incidents targeting a senior TMC leader since the BJP came to power in West Bengal earlier this month.
