The Indian women’s hockey team registered its first victory at the Hockey World Cup, defeating South Africa 6-1 in their Pool D clash on Tuesday.
India had earlier played out a 2-2 draw against Olympic silver medallists China in their opening match. Against South Africa, however, the Indian women dominated from the very beginning and put relentless pressure on their opponents.
Suneelita opened the scoring for India in the 11th minute. Navneet Kaur doubled the lead in the 17th minute, while Sushila Chanu made it 3-0 in the 25th minute.
India continued its attacking display after the break. Deepika scored in the 38th minute, followed by Lalremsiami in the 44th minute and Sakshi Rana in the 45th minute.
South Africa managed just one goal through Kayla de Waal. India maintained control until the final whistle to seal a commanding 6-1 victory and register their first win of the tournament.
