India suffered a 1-3 defeat against world No. 1 Netherlands in the men’s Hockey World Cup match at the Wagner Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen. The victory secured the Netherlands a place in the semi-finals, while India’s hopes of making the last four have become increasingly difficult.
The first half remained goalless despite both teams creating opportunities. The Netherlands earned several penalty corners, while India created chances from open play, but neither side could find the breakthrough.
The Netherlands finally opened the scoring in the 41st minute through Duco Telgenkamp. Heidemakers then doubled the lead with a field goal in the 49th minute.
India hit back in the 51st minute when captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to make it 1-2. However, the Netherlands restored their two-goal advantage just two minutes later, with Van Dam scoring in the 53rd minute to seal a 3-1 victory.
India now face a difficult route to the semi-finals. They need to beat Argentina by a margin of more than six goals in their match on August 24. At the same time, England must lose both of their remaining matches for India to have a chance of progressing.
The high-profile match was also witnessed by cricket legends Steve Waugh and Rahul Dravid, along with hockey greats Jamie Dwyer and Teun de Nooijer.
