Shubman Gill Speaks on Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan Injuries
India have suffered a setback ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka, with star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and top-order batter Sai Sudharsan ruled out due to injuries.
Bumrah was dealing with a knee injury, while Sudharsan had a toe issue. Both players were initially included in India's squad for the Sri Lanka tour before being ruled out after fitness assessments.
India Closely Monitoring Injured Players
India captain Shubman Gill said the team management remains in constant contact with players recovering from injuries. Their fitness is being monitored at the BCCI Centre of Excellence as the team assesses their progress.
Gill explained that Sai Sudharsan initially appeared likely to recover in time for the series. However, repeated scans showed that his injury was not improving as much as expected.
Why India Did Not Take a Risk With Sudharsan
Gill said Sudharsan's situation was unfortunate, but the team had to make a decision based on the player's best interests.
The India captain pointed out that a Test match lasts five days, making it different from a one-day or T20 game. Playing an injured cricketer in such a demanding format could increase the risk of aggravating the injury.
For that reason, India chose not to take unnecessary risks with either Sudharsan or Bumrah.
Gill Confident Despite Key Absences
The absence of Bumrah and Sudharsan was disappointing for the Indian team, but Gill said it had not significantly affected the team's morale.
He expressed confidence in India's squad, saying that any player selected in the playing XI has the ability to perform well and help the team win under different conditions.
Gill Backs Young Manav Suthar
With Washington Sundar also recovering from injury, India enter the Test series with Ravindra Jadeja as the main all-rounder.
Gill believes young Manav Suthar could provide an important option if given an opportunity. He highlighted Suthar's ability with both bat and ball and said the youngster has the potential to develop into a quality No. 8 batter.
Preparation Important Ahead of Sri Lanka Tests
Gill also stressed the importance of having enough preparation time before a Test match, particularly when playing in different conditions.
According to the India captain, having around a week to 10 days before the start of a Test can significantly help players adapt. Some Indian players had already gained experience through India A matches, while others got exposure to local conditions during a match against an SLC XI.
Despite the absence of key players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan, Gill remains confident that India's available squad has enough quality to compete strongly in the Sri Lanka Test series.
