China is showcasing its growing strength in humanoid robotics at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, where more than 300 domestic companies are displaying over 2,000 exhibits and launching more than 150 new products. The five-day event highlights China's ambitions to become a global leader in robotics and embodied artificial intelligence.

The conference comes at a time when China's robotics industry is attracting significant investor attention. Unitree Robotics, one of China's best-known humanoid robot makers, saw its shares surge by as much as 629% during its Shanghai stock market debut. The company raised about 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million) through its IPO, which was heavily oversubscribed.

However, industry leaders acknowledge that humanoid robots still have a long way to go before becoming truly useful in everyday environments. Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing said the sector is approaching a potential "ChatGPT moment", when robots could understand simple voice or text commands and perform a wide range of tasks in unfamiliar surroundings. He estimated that such a breakthrough could still be two to 10 years away.

China currently dominates the global humanoid robotics market. The country has rapidly expanded production and is increasingly deploying robots in manufacturing, logistics, services and other areas. However, many current humanoids remain more impressive in demonstrations than in practical commercial applications, with cost, reliability and productivity still posing major challenges.

The robotics boom is also unfolding against growing US-China technology tensions. The United States has recently imposed restrictions on imports of certain foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, citing national security concerns. These measures could create additional challenges for Chinese robotics companies seeking to expand in the American market.

Despite these challenges, the Beijing conference demonstrates the scale of China's robotics ecosystem, with companies showcasing humanoids designed for factories, warehouses, healthcare, education and household assistance. The industry's next major challenge will be turning impressive demonstrations into affordable, reliable products that can deliver measurable value in the real world.
