Born on May 22, 1963, in Kota, Rajasthan, Ajay Ahuja joined the Indian Air Force in 1985. An experienced fighter pilot with over 1,000 hours of flying experience, he served as the Flight Commander of No. 17 Squadron (Golden Arrows) before being deployed during the Kargil conflict.
On May 27, 1999, during Operation Safed Sagar, Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa was forced to eject from his MiG-27 aircraft after an engine failure. Despite knowing that enemy surface-to-air missiles were active in the area, Ajay Ahuja chose to stay back to locate his fellow officer and guide rescue teams to the crash site.
While carrying out the rescue mission, Ahuja's MiG-21 was struck by a Stinger surface-to-air missile. He ejected safely from the aircraft and transmitted his last known location. According to the Indian Air Force, he survived the ejection but later died after being captured. India maintained that post-mortem findings showed he had survived landing, while Pakistan disputed those claims.
For displaying exceptional courage and selfless devotion to duty, Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India's highest gallantry awards. His sacrifice became a symbol of the Indian Air Force's bravery during the Kargil War and continues to inspire generations of Indians.
