New Delhi: The National Film Awards are set to mark a historic change this year, with the prestigious ceremony moving outside Delhi for the first time in its 72-year history. The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony will take place on September 22 at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, formerly known as Kevadia. President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to present the awards to the winners. The decision marks a departure from the long-standing practice of hosting the National Film Awards ceremony in the national capital. The inaugural awards ceremony was held in 1954 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, a venue that has hosted the prestigious event several times over the years. With the 72nd edition being held in Gujarat, the awards ceremony will enter a new chapter by moving beyond Delhi for the first time. How are the National Film Awards selected? The winners of the National Film Awards are chosen each year by a national jury appointed by the Government of India. The jury evaluates films from India's diverse regional and national film industries before selecting the winners across various categories. The awards are traditionally presented by the President of India, adding to the significance and prestige of the ceremony in the country's film industry. The administration of the National Film Awards has also undergone a change in recent years. Between 1974 and 2022, the Directorate of Film Festivals was responsible for conducting the awards. Since 2022, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) has taken over the responsibility. The awards are primarily organised under two broad categories -Feature Films and Non-Feature Films. The honours recognise achievements across feature cinema, documentaries, short films and other forms of non-fiction filmmaking. Article 370, Bramayugam among major winners The venue may have changed, but the winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced earlier in New Delhi in July. The awards recognise films that received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification during 2024. Article 370 emerged as the Best Feature Film, while Yami Gautam was honoured with the Best Actress award for her performance in the film. The Best Actor honour was shared by Malayalam veteran Mammootty for Bramayugam and Kartik Aaryan for his performance in Chandu Champion. Other notable winners included Randeep Hooda, who received the Best Debut Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Kalki 2898 AD was recognised as the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Meanwhile, Captain Miller, directed by Arun Matheswaran and starring Dhanush, won the award for Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values. With the ceremony now shifting from Delhi to Gujarat, the 72nd National Film Awards are set to become a landmark edition in the history of India's most prestigious film honours.
