A major political development has emerged in Bangladesh regarding ties with India. Bangladesh’s ruling BNP has stated that future relations with India will depend on a new Ganges Water Sharing Treaty. The current Indo-Bangladesh Ganges Water Sharing Agreement, signed in 1996, is set to expire this December.
Speaking at an event in Dhaka, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Bangladesh wants immediate discussions with India to finalize a treaty that meets the expectations and needs of the Bangladeshi people. He also expressed concern over uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the existing 30-year agreement signed during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, warning that it could create worries over future water-sharing arrangements between the two countries.
