An Indian national was among those killed in a deadly riot at Sri Lanka’s Negombo Prison, where clashes between inmates turned violent and left dozens dead.

The unrest reportedly began as a fight between rival groups of prisoners and quickly escalated, with prison staff and security forces becoming involved. More than 100 people were also injured.

Indian National Among the Victims

The death of the Indian prisoner has raised concern in India, as authorities work to establish exactly what happened during the violence.

Sri Lankan officials are investigating the incident, including how the clash escalated and whether prison security measures were sufficient to contain it.

Prison Conditions Under Scrutiny

The riot has also put Sri Lanka’s overcrowded prison system back under the spotlight. Tensions among inmates, alleged gang activity and poor prison conditions are among the issues being examined.

What began as an internal clash has now become a major security incident, leaving families waiting for answers and raising fresh questions about safety inside Sri Lankan prisons.
