At least 27 people have been killed and 42 others injured following a Russian attack in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, authorities said on Saturday.
The strike hit an area in the Bucha district, near the Ukrainian capital, where a facility in the village of Myla was struck before a major fire and a series of explosions followed. Ukrainian authorities said the incident caused extensive damage to nearby infrastructure.
According to Kyiv regional officials, at least 50 residential buildings were damaged in the attack. The blaze also spread to nearby homes and a restaurant, while a care facility for elderly people and people with disabilities was also affected.
The scale of the incident prompted a major evacuation operation. Officials said more than 380 people, including dozens of children, were moved away from the affected area as emergency teams continued rescue and firefighting operations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said authorities had launched criminal proceedings over possible official negligence. He also stressed that ammunition and explosive materials should not be stored close to residential areas.
The attack comes as Kyiv and surrounding areas have faced repeated aerial attacks for several consecutive days, causing widespread disruption to civilian life and economic activity.
The exact circumstances surrounding the facility and the explosion remain under investigation. Ukrainian officials have warned that the casualty figures could increase as search and rescue operations continue.
