Saima Wazed, daughter of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has resigned as the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for South-East Asia.
Wazed has faced allegations involving financial irregularities, fraud and issues related to official documents. She has denied the allegations, while investigations into the claims have continued.She was placed on unpaid administrative leave in 2025 amid controversy surrounding expenses related to a China trip, details of her educational qualifications and a land transaction in Bangladesh.
In her resignation letter, Wazed said she had lost confidence in the WHO leadership. She also cited financial difficulties after remaining without a salary for an extended period.Her resignation comes after the regional committee recommended action against her, adding further significance to the development.
