The US Navy’s USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is expected to dock in Thailand next week, a Thai official said on Tuesday, following an extended deployment in the Middle East.
The carrier has been at sea for more than 200 consecutive days without a port call, reportedly setting a modern-day record. The ship recently left the Middle East after supporting US military operations amid the conflict with Iran.
Rest and Recreation for Crew
The Thai official said the carrier’s visit will primarily provide rest and recreation for its crew following the lengthy deployment.
The USS Abraham Lincoln carries around 5,000 sailors and Marines. Typical US Navy deployments last between six and nine months, although missions can be extended during periods of conflict.
Extended Middle East Mission
The carrier departed its home port of San Diego in November before being redirected to the Middle East to support US military operations.
Its prolonged deployment has attracted attention, with reports raising concerns about crew morale and conditions aboard the ship. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected those reports, saying they misrepresented the situation on board.
Thailand-US Military Ties
Thailand and the United States have maintained a longstanding military partnership. Thailand is a US treaty ally and a major non-NATO ally, with both countries regularly conducting military cooperation and exercises.
The upcoming port visit is expected to further reinforce the two countries’ longstanding defence relationship.
