Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna has revealed that cyber fraudsters once targeted his family, with some of his family members being trapped in a "digital arrest" scam for nearly six to seven hours. Speaking at a cybercrime awareness programme organised by the police, Nagarjuna said cybercriminals are increasingly targeting not only ordinary citizens but also celebrities.
Nagarjuna recalled that around five years ago, he received a phone call from a person claiming to be a bank official, who attempted to lure him into an investment scam. Around the same time, members of his family also received calls from fraudsters posing as law enforcement and customs officials. They falsely claimed that a parcel linked to narcotics had been sent in their names and intimidated them into remaining on calls for several hours in what is commonly known as a "digital arrest" scam.
The actor said he now follows strict cyber safety practices, including changing his mobile and Wi-Fi passwords regularly and avoiding the storage of sensitive personal information on his phone. He urged people to remain cautious while receiving unexpected calls, messages, or investment offers from unknown individuals.
Nagarjuna also praised the Telangana Police for their efforts in combating cybercrime and creating public awareness. Officials at the event noted that investment frauds and digital arrest scams are on the rise, especially targeting senior citizens and retired employees, and appealed to victims to report cyber frauds immediately.
