The Bar Council of India (BCI) has withdrawn its earlier order that temporarily halted the enrolment of 2026 graduates of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, as advocates. The decision came just hours after the Council directed all State Bar Councils not to enrol the graduating batch amid a controversy over the proposed participation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant in the university's convocation.
According to the revised order, all 2026 graduates of NALSAR are now eligible to enrol with the State Bar Council of their choice. The BCI stated that the majority of students were not involved in the controversy and should not suffer for the actions of a few individuals.
However, the Council has decided to continue its factual inquiry into the matter. It has sought a report from the university regarding individuals allegedly involved in organising or encouraging the campaign related to the convocation invitation. Further action, if any, will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
The controversy began after a section of NALSAR students objected to the invitation extended to Chief Justice Surya Kant as the chief guest for the university's convocation, prompting widespread debate within legal and academic circles.
