Gadchiroli Snakebite Tragedy Claims Three Lives
A tragic incident in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district has raised serious concerns about student safety at residential schools. Three tribal girls died after being bitten by a venomous snake at the hostel of an aided tribal residential school in Japtalai village.
Three other girls were also bitten and are undergoing medical treatment. The district administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
Snake Bit Students While They Were Sleeping
According to officials, the incident occurred around midnight on Sunday when the girls were sleeping on the floor of the school hostel.
The residential school is located in Japtalai village, around 10 kilometres from the Dhanora taluka headquarters in Gadchiroli district.
Three girls, aged 8, 12 and 14, died following the snakebite. The three surviving students are between 11 and 14 years old and are receiving treatment, officials said.
Three Injured Students Under Treatment
The three surviving students were promptly given anti-venom medication and are being closely monitored by medical teams.
Gadchiroli District Collector Avishyant Panda directed the district surgeon to ensure there were no gaps in treatment and that the injured students received special medical care.
Inquiry Into School Safety Measures
The district administration has ordered a detailed investigation to determine exactly how the snake entered the hostel and whether adequate protective measures were available for the students.
The inquiry will also examine whether the school management followed the required safety rules and precautions. Teams from the Tribal Development Department are expected to inspect the site and collect relevant information.
If the investigation finds negligence or safety lapses, officials have said responsibility will be fixed and action will be taken against those found responsible.
NHRC Takes Cognisance
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken cognisance of the incident and issued a notice seeking details from the authorities.
The development puts the spotlight on safety standards at residential schools, particularly those located in remote and tribal areas. The incident has raised questions about hostel infrastructure, protection against snakes and other hazards, and access to emergency medical care.
Concern Over Safety of Residential School Students
Residential schools provide accommodation and education to students who often come from remote tribal communities. Ensuring safe hostel facilities is therefore an important responsibility of the authorities and school management.
The Gadchiroli incident has highlighted the need to review safety arrangements in hostels, including measures to prevent snakes and other potentially dangerous animals from entering sleeping areas.
Administration Promises Action
Gadchiroli's co-guardian minister Ashish Jaiswal expressed grief over the deaths and said the administration had been instructed to provide all necessary medical facilities and support to the injured students.
The district administration is expected to take further action after receiving the inquiry report. If the investigation establishes negligence or violations of safety requirements, officials have indicated that responsibility will be fixed accordingly.
