Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on Monday, with 15 Delhi-bound flights diverted due to adverse weather conditions.
Of the 15 diverted flights, 12 were redirected to Jaipur, while two were diverted to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow. Three of the flights diverted to Jaipur were international services.
Heavy Rain Hits Delhi
Several parts of the national capital witnessed intense rainfall and thunderstorms, affecting normal life and causing disruptions on roads as well as at the airport.
The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall in parts of Delhi, while other areas were placed under a yellow alert for moderate showers.
Flight Operations Affected
The adverse weather conditions affected aircraft arriving at Delhi airport, forcing airlines to divert flights to nearby airports for safety reasons.
Passengers travelling through Delhi were advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines before leaving for the airport, as weather conditions could continue to affect flight schedules. Airlines have also issued advisories regarding possible delays and operational changes.
Traffic and Waterlogging
The heavy downpour also caused waterlogging and traffic congestion across several parts of Delhi-NCR. Commuters faced difficulties as rain affected road movement during the day.
Authorities and airport teams continued monitoring the weather and working with airlines to manage the disruption.
