Mumbai: Security personnel detained a man allegedly carrying a fake Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) identity card in Mumbai ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled programme in the city.
The incident came to light amid heightened security arrangements in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), where the Prime Minister was scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) today . Officials became suspicious of the man’s credentials during a security check and subsequently detained him for questioning.
According to reports, the man claimed to be associated with the PMO and was accompanied by another person who was allegedly acting as his bodyguard. The accompanying individual was reportedly found carrying a firearm.
During verification, authorities found discrepancies in the identity card presented by the alleged PMO impersonator. Police subsequently took both individuals into custody and began investigating their identities, the source of the credentials and the circumstances behind their presence in the high-security area.
The firearm recovered from the alleged bodyguard has also become part of the investigation. Authorities are examining whether the weapon was legally possessed and why it was being carried in the vicinity of a venue where extensive security arrangements were in place for the Prime Minister’s visit.
The incident occurred shortly before Modi’s scheduled appearance in Mumbai, prompting security agencies to conduct additional checks and verify the movements and credentials of people in the area.
Police are now investigating the motive behind the alleged impersonation and whether the two men intended to gain access to the event or were involved in any larger security-related activity.
The case has highlighted the importance of stringent identity verification, particularly around venues hosting high-profile political and government events.
