India’s widespread use of UPI and QR-code payments has caught the attention of a French woman, whose observations about the country’s digital payment culture have gone viral on social media.

During her visit to India, she was surprised to find that digital payments were not limited to shopping malls or large restaurants but were also widely accepted at street-food stalls, small local shops, cafés and auto-rickshaws.

‘I Didn’t Expect It to Be Everywhere’

The French visitor said she was already familiar with UPI before travelling to India but did not expect it to be used on such a large scale.

From buying snacks and street food to paying for an auto ride, she found that simply scanning a QR code with a smartphone was often enough to complete a transaction.

Even Small Payments Go Digital

One of the things that surprised her most was the use of UPI even for small-value purchases.

The ability to make quick digital payments for inexpensive snacks and everyday items highlighted to her how deeply digital transactions have become integrated into daily life in India.

Social Media Users React

Her comments generated considerable interest online, with many Indian users pointing out that UPI has become a routine part of everyday transactions across the country.

Some users also welcomed the fact that international visitors are noticing and appreciating India’s rapidly expanding digital payment ecosystem.

India’s UPI Revolution

Launched in 2016, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed the way people make payments in India.

The system enables instant bank-to-bank transactions through mobile applications, allowing consumers and businesses to make payments without relying on cash.

Its widespread adoption has made QR-code payments common across a wide range of businesses, including small vendors and street-side establishments.
