India has approved a $5.46 billion defence procurement plan aimed at strengthening the country's military capabilities. The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by the Defence Minister, gave in-principle approval for the purchase of advanced military equipment worth nearly ₹52,000 crore.
The approved package includes surface-to-air missiles, portable anti-tank missiles, anti-drone and electronic warfare systems, jet-based kamikaze drones, and high-altitude unmanned aircraft for intelligence and surveillance missions.
The Navy will also receive new naval mines, shipborne drones, and advanced testing facilities to enhance maritime security.
The move comes as India continues to modernize its armed forces, reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, and strengthen domestic defence manufacturing. The decision follows recent security challenges and growing strategic concerns in the Indian Ocean region.
