Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is considering a comprehensive set of reforms aimed at modernising the state’s prison system, senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has said.

According to Chennithala, discussions are underway to overhaul key aspects of prison administration, including infrastructure upgrades, rehabilitation programmes for inmates, and improvements in the overall correctional system. He noted that the initiative reflects a broader effort to make prisons more efficient, transparent, and reform-oriented.

The proposed reforms are expected to focus on improving living conditions inside prisons, strengthening security systems, and expanding rehabilitation and skill-development programmes for prisoners. The objective, he said, is to ensure that prisons function not only as custodial institutions but also as centres for reform and reintegration.

The remarks come amid renewed public discussions on the functioning of correctional facilities in Kerala, with increasing attention on safety standards, inmate welfare, and administrative efficiency. Authorities are also reportedly examining the use of modern technology and training programmes to improve prison management.

Officials believe that if implemented, the proposed reforms could significantly modernise Kerala’s prison system and align it with evolving standards of correctional administration in the country.
