Kolkata Police has registered a case against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over alleged violations of conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for a TMCP foundation day programme held in the city.
The FIR was registered at Hastings Police Station against Banerjee and organisers of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) event following the August 28 gathering at Cathedral Road.
The Calcutta High Court had permitted the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of TMCP to hold its foundation day programme at a designated stretch of Cathedral Road. The court had imposed specific conditions, including keeping one side of the road open to ensure the movement of vehicles and the public. The event was also subject to a specified time limit.
According to the police, the conditions were allegedly not followed during the programme. Authorities alleged that supporters occupied the other side of the road, affecting traffic movement. Police also alleged that barricades were pushed aside and personnel deployed at the venue faced resistance from the crowd.
The police further alleged that the programme continued beyond the time permitted by the High Court.
The case has been registered under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation will examine the alleged role of those involved in the event.
The development has added another political and legal flashpoint in West Bengal, where tensions between the ruling establishment and the Trinamool Congress have remained high.
However, the allegations in the FIR are yet to be established in court, and the registration of a case does not by itself establish criminal liability.
