Arms Theft Reported at Bolarum Army Facility

The security breach came to light on August 31 at the 20 Madras Regiment facility in Bolarum, located within the Secunderabad Cantonment area.

Army personnel discovered that the locks of the weapons storage facility had been broken and that firearms and ammunition were missing. A complaint was subsequently filed with Bolarum Police, triggering a formal investigation.

What Weapons Were Stolen?

According to Army-linked information cited in reports, 12 weapons were reported missing from the facility.

The stolen items reportedly include AK-203 assault rifles, an INSAS rifle and pistols, along with magazines and a substantial quantity of ammunition. A night-vision device has also been reported missing in connection with the breach.

Why Has the NIA Joined the Investigation?

The involvement of a national investigative agency underscores the sensitivity of the case.

The NIA has now joined the probe, while Army authorities, Military Intelligence and local police continue to investigate different aspects of the incident. Investigators are seeking to determine how weapons were removed from a restricted military facility and whether the theft involved an organised network or people with authorised access.

Security Lapses Come Under Scrutiny

One of the major areas of investigation is the security arrangement at the armoury.

Reports indicate that surveillance cameras were not operational during the relevant period and that only a limited number of guards were on duty. Investigators are examining whether these lapses contributed to the theft and whether the security protocols at the facility were followed properly.

Army Personnel Questioned

Officials are questioning personnel who had authorised access to the storage and custody areas.

Investigators are examining weapon issue and receipt registers, access records, CCTV footage and the circumstances surrounding the last physical verification of the weapons. The weapons were reportedly last accounted for on August 30, with the theft discovered the following morning.

Four Personnel Under Suspicion

Investigators have reportedly narrowed their focus to four Army personnel after questioning several members of the Madras Regiment.
