New Delhi: Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil has said that the government is working to ensure that no water from the Indus river system will flow into Pakistan in the coming years, amid ongoing discussions around the Indus Waters Treaty.

Speaking on the issue, Patil said the Centre is actively implementing measures following the decision to place the treaty in abeyance, adding that efforts are underway to fully utilise river waters within India.

He stated that the government’s goal is to ensure that “not a single drop” of water from the Indus system reaches Pakistan, reiterating that all available resources will be redirected for domestic use and development needs.

The remarks come as India continues to review its long-term water management strategy under the Indus basin system, which has been a key point of contention between India and Pakistan for decades.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, governs the sharing of rivers in the Indus basin between the two countries. Recent developments indicate a significant shift in India’s approach, with officials suggesting a stronger focus on internal utilisation of water resources.

Further administrative and infrastructure measures are expected as part of the government’s plan to enhance water distribution within Indian states.
