The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police have launched a major crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications across the city. Over the past five to six months, police seized 2,566 illegal number plates and 569 illegal silencers during enforcement drives.
The action was carried out across all 13 traffic divisions under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. In Sangvi, the seized number plates were destroyed by running a bulldozer over them to prevent their reuse.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vikrant Deshmukh said police had received several complaints about vehicles fitted with illegal silencers that produce excessive and disturbing noise.
Following directions from senior officers, traffic police conducted special drives against vehicles using illegal number plates and modified silencers.
The police have warned that the crackdown will continue in the coming days. However, residents say the nuisance caused by loud vehicle silencers continues in several areas despite regular enforcement.
